As New Jersey attorneys who represent those injured due to medical malpractice and medical related negligence, we learned about a rising epidemic in fungal meningitis outbreaks allegedly caused by contaminated epidural steroid injections produced by New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass. More than 280 people contracted fungal meningitis (23 of whom have died) after receiving epidural injections produced by NECC. Roughly 14,000 people used the injections from the same lot. Epidural steroid injections are typically used to inject pain and anti-inflammatory medication into the spine and treat the symptoms from spinal injuries and disease.
This does not appear to be a simple case of a contaminated batch of medications. Interestingly, there are allegations that the owners of the company are responsible and a full blown criminal investigation is also underway. The owners also appeared to attempt to hide company assets and a bankruptcy judge just froze approximately $21 million in assets. Unfortunately, even with the assets frozen it does not appear that the company has enough assets to compensate the injured people and their families for the full extent of the alleged harm. In any case, our prayers and thoughts go out for those injured or killed in this outbreak.
