The National Transportation Safety Board recently recommended new safety standards in an effort to reduce injuries and deaths caused by vehicles sliding underneath tractor-trailer trucks. As any driver knows, these trucks have large blind spots on their sides and rear. Smaller vehicles, motorcycles, and bicyclists that collide with these trucks have a high risk of sliding underneath. The result are often, unfortunately, catastrophic.
The NTSB has recommended that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandate the following safety features for newly manufactured tractor-trailers:
• Sensors or rearview cameras to help truck drivers detect other vehicles in their blind spots.
• Side protection systems to help prevent underriding.
Their report can be found here.
We obviously think this is good move and will hopefully prevent serious injuries and deaths.
